IRS Issues Warning about Hurricane Relief Charities


The IRS issues a warning: Ensure Hurricane Florence relief charities are legitimate. The IRS is cautioning those who want to make charitable contributions to storm victims to avoid the scams that often follow major disasters. The tax agency recommends using its search feature, “Tax Exempt Organization Search,” on the IRS website, to help find or verify qualified charities. Also, make contributions only by check or credit card and don’t provide personal information, such as a Social Security number.

IRS Alerts Veterans about Tax Credit


The IRS is alerting certain veterans that they may be due a tax credit or refund. The 2016 Combat-Injured Veterans Tax Fairness Act affects veterans who received disability severance payments after 1/17/91, and were improperly taxed on the amounts on their federal tax returns. To recover the taxes, these veterans must file Form 1040X, “Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.” They can submit claims based on the actual disability severance payments, or use a simplified method to claim refunds.

There Will Be a New Revised 8233 Form


The IRS has updated its nonresident alien withholding exemption form. A revised Form 8233, https://bit.ly/2NUjxCR, was recently released to reflect changes in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Compensation paid to nonresident aliens for independent personal services performed in the U.S. is generally subject to a 30% withholding rate, or to graduated tax rates. However, some payments are exempt due to tax treaties. Form 8233 is used to request an exemption. Nonresident alien students,
