Effective August 1, 2015, HBL is elated to announce the promotion of one of our own tax managers, Mike DeVries, to be HBL’s sixth and newest shareholder. Mike and his sister, Mari, merged their practice, DeVries CPAs of Arizona, P.C., with Hammel, Beal and Lauer, P.C. in May of 2013 to form the new HBL CPAs, P.C.

Mike grew up in New York State, but moved to Tucson with his family where he attended Canyon del Oro High School. After high school, he moved to Flagstaff to attend Northern Arizona University, but later finished his undergraduate career at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, where DeVries earned a Bachelor of Business Administration with an emphasis in accounting.

Mike practiced as a CPA in Texas for nearly 25 years before returning to Tucson in 2007 to join his sister at DeVries CPA’s of Arizona, P.C. He specializes in individual, partnership, corporate, and not-for-profit taxation. He is HBL’s prime partner for not-for-profit taxation. Mike is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Arizona Society of Certified Public Accountants. DeVries’s wide array of community involvement includes serving as treasurer of the Rotary Club of Tucson Foundation and the Finance Chair of the Tucson Classics Car Show. In the past he served as the Treasurer and an Advisory Board Member of the Salvation Army of Tucson.

Mike is the proud father of one son who practices as an attorney here in Tucson. He enjoys golf whenever he is able to steal away from the office. When asked why he became a CPA, Mike answered, “Numbers are logical and that makes sense to me”.
